Olympics 2020 in 2021

On my Reinvented Life Show yesterday, I had the fortune to interview Brooke Wolford, a member of the US Women’s Rowing Team. Imagine having your sights aimed at heading to Tokyo for the Olympic Summer games. Then, with a year postponement, your training moves from the water to land. Instead of being in the boat, you’re on Zoom with a coach analyzing your body movement virtually.

It’s a reality that no one could have saw coming.

Yet as I interviewed Brooke yesterday, it was not this shift, this reinvention of her plans, that struck me the most. It was her leadership. It was the fact that this not-yet-thirty-year-old, has wisdom well beyond her years. It was the fact that she recognized she now had another year to train. She recognized that she had another year to get stronger. She recognized that along the way, she also needed to be balanced. Although the majority of her days and nights are spent focused on her training, she also enjoys cooking and other activities that ground her.

Brooke’s story of successes and failures can serve as a reminder to all of us that life will not be a straight line. The challenges that affect us all can be seen as opportunities for growth. An opportunity to strive for greater heights. An opportunity to display more grit.

What are you doing in your life today that is a growth-step?

Congratulations Brooke on all you’ve accomplished on your journey this far, and for emerging as not just a world-class athlete, but being a leader and an example for others.
